AIG Car Insurance also sucks.
I was going to blog about this event and then realized I had written the whole thing out pretty much the way I would have written it here:
this is so awesome...i get an email a week or so ago from AIG saying "we tried to send you a refund check but it came back, what is your new address?"
i gave it to them and asked "why are you sending me a check refund? did my rates go down at all?" and she said "i don't know, i'm just the mailing person." i get the check and it says "Aig refund a result of policy cancellation."
so i called them and they said, "oh, yeah, it says here you have an exclusion on your policy for my roommate?"
this has been an ongoing problem ever since she moved out of my place 2 years ago; they refuse to remove her as an exclusion. so basically any time i have to get my policy updated, reissued, etc, i have to fax in a form assuring them that my friend , who lives on the other side of the city and is not a licensed driver in the first place, will not drive my car. i asked, "do you make every austin resident explicitly exclude her from their policy, then?" she didn't laugh.
so i just groan and say, "for god's sake she doesn't live with me."
"well, sir, we have no way to know that."
"um, except that i moved and i am telling you she doesn't live with me???"i gave the woman my new address in october the LAST time they cancelled my policy (because they had my wrong address and USPS wasn't forwarding my mail reliably) and she didn't record the new address. but i wasn't surprised when i didn't get any mail from them because i paid for several months up front so i didn't expect a bill for a while. turns out they did mail me something--the exclusion form to sign--and they sent it to my old old address i never got it and hence never signed it so they cancelled my policy and notified me by mailing me... at that old address. they didn't call or email. the ONLY reason i found out is because of that woman in the fucking mail room who emailed me about the refund check. i asked over the phone why they didn't email me or call me when my policy was cancelled and she said, "sir, we can't call or email every person whose policy gets cancelled!" i don't really know why not.
Aig agrees to fax the exclusion form to stephanie at work since i don't have a fax machine and says, "oh, but you will need to pay SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS to get the policy reissued since it has been cancelled by Aig."
and i said, "but that was your fault."
"i'm sorry, sir, these are our rules."
in fact, during the conversation she said "i'm sorry, sir" quite a bit, maybe twenty times. ironically, i'm pretty sure she was not sorry about anything. also, her saying she was sorry did not actually help solve any of my problems in any way. "i don't need you to be sorry," i said, "i need you to help me fix this." apparently she was not sorry enough for that.
i ran some errands today and one of the places i was going to, lo and behold, a geico office right next door. so i walk in, and these two women are super-nice and make fun of the phone operators, can't understand why they won't remove her as an exclusion since she clearly doesn't live with me anymore and they reissue my policy and only make me put $200 down for the first couple months.
but the best part is, she tells me, "by the way, you said you have been uninsured for a week or two..."
"... that's not true, you have been uninsured since november 20th."
